September 23 Weekend Specials - Washburn Acoustics!

Washburn acoustic guitars are all 50% off retail THIS WEEKEND ONLY at Dancing Dragon Music, 4220 North May Avenue, Oklahoma City.

Yes, you read that correctly, and no, we haven't lost our minds.  Washburn acoustic guitars are absolutely phenomenal and designed by and for guitar players.    From the Washburn website:
Some stories demand to be told. Others are simply content on being heard. Heard through music, through lyrics, through a cultural revolution. This is the story of Washburn Guitars.

Steeped in the tradition of fine instrument making, Washburn Guitar’s dynamic 120-history began in Chicago in 1883. The original guitar factory was located just blocks away from Maxwell Street.

In the early 1920s, Maxwell Street itself would emerge as the epicenter of a musical movement. Often considered the first entry point for thousands of African-Americans arriving from the Mississippi Delta, Maxwell Street became a hotbed for Delta Blues in its most raw and dramatic form. Newcomers and established musicians alike would listen and jam with one another in an atmosphere void of commercial influence. Once recorded, this powerful, emotional style of music would not only become the dominant form of blues but would radically change the emerging sound of rock and roll.

There, on Maxwell Street, as well as in alleyways, city sidewalks, bars, and honky-tonks around the country, Washburn guitars were embraced as the very embodiment and reflective spirit of the hard-working musicians who played them as well as the employees who designed and crafted them. It is the same spirit that guides Washburn to this day.

The history of Washburn Guitars is the history of a wide range of musicians. From blues players who shaped rock ‘n roll to multi-platinum recording artists to emerging guitar virtuosos. It is a history that can be heard and experienced every time you turn on the radio or listen to a live performance. It is a history built by skilled craftsmen and musicians who share one common love–a passion for the guitar.

Washburn continues to be a consistent leader in combining design, innovation, and technology to deliver the rich, bold sounds for a vast musical landscape.

Tour of Drum Workshop

From the lead Dragon, Guy Ragland:

I flew out to the Drum Workshop factory in Oxnard, CA on Sunday and we had a day-long event on Monday. It included a tour through the factory where we saw the entire production process for building handmade drums. We got to build our own drum shell as a souvenir and we checked out the new finishes on the DW Performance Series Kits.

They had Terry Bozzio and Thomas Lang there to demo the gear. They are both nationally known drummers. We spent an hour and a half giving them feedback on their product and the business in general. Lots of food and some great music from local artists.

DW is a custom shop and they can build virtually anything you can imagine including exotic woods and custom graphics. They’re a great company and very attentive to the needs of the customer and their dealer network.

And yes, we carry them at Dancing Dragon Music, 4220 North May Avenue, Oklahoma City!

If They Will Do It To Them...

At Dancing Dragon, we're about music, not politics, so this blog today is a little different and off the beaten path.  But, it's about guitars and politics, so we hope you come along for the ride...

If you're a serious musician, you no doubt heard about a raid on the Gibson guitar factory in Tennessee last year as well as previous raids on Gibson.  The bottom line is that Gibson has come under government scrutiny for using wood that is not approved for export by the country of origin.  In their previous raid, Gibson was found to not have violated the law.

The federal government has seized about $500,000 worth of wood used to make fingerboards and as you know, without a fingerboard, a guitar is little more than a paper weight.

Here is a snippet from a Human Events story regarding the Tennessee Congresswoman who is demanding answers from the Obama Administration as to why the job-creating Gibson Guitar Company is being targed:
The Tennessee congresswoman, in whose district many Gibson Guitar workers live, co-signed a Sept. 8 letter to three federal agencies that raided Gibson Aug. 24 demanding status on the government’s investigation.

“Having armed federal agents raid an iconic American company is no way to inspire economic certainty and spur job creation,” said Rep. Marsha W. Blackburn (R.-Tenn.), the vice-chairman of the Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade sub-committee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

The letter is part of Blackburn’s struggle to figure out why the administration is going after Gibson in such a heavy-handed manner, when there is significant question whether a crime has been committed, she said.

In 2008, the Lacey Act of 1900, which forbids the importation of items into the United States that are not approved for export by the country of origin, was amended to specifically focus federal law enforcement on imported woods.

An affidavit filed with the search warrant request, referred to the illegal importation of wood from India, which the letter also addresses:  “The source country at issue, however, has no problem with Gibson’s actions. The deputy director general of foreign trade for India has stated that India would allow the export.”
Regardless of how you feel about Gibson guitars, this should be a wake-up call and yes, musicians should get involved in the process of protecting and demanding freedom from an over-reaching government.
